A propos de Denis Chobelet
Tour à tour à l’exercice de la peinture, du dessin, de la photographie et du graphisme, Denis se définit comme un pictorialiste à l’ère des technologies informatiques. Il découvre la PAO à la fin des années 80 et l’utilise en pionnier en apprenant la nuit à manier cette technique pour la production d’affiches et de flyer. Il en fera son métier pendant une vingtaine d’années sans quitter la peinture ou le dessin, avec toujours présente la photographie. Au cours de ses voyages proches et lointains, il se crée une bibliothèque d’images du monde animal, minéral et humain, prises dans l’instant
A partir des années 2000, il passe du champ professionnel au champ artistique, et développe progressivement une création très personnelle où se mélangent genres, pays, cultures, ce sont les Anonymes. Des hommes et des femmes jeunes ou âgé.e.s, de tout type et couleur de peau photographié.e.s là-bas dans leur contexte et restitué.e.s ici dans un fond abstrait et coloré, choisi pour le contraste, l’osmose ou l’appartenance ethnique. De face, de dos, de profil, assis, debout, couchés, les Anonymes nous apparaissent presque vivants, prêts à sortir du cadre, intemporels. Cet effet hyperréaliste est le résultat de plusieurs heures de travail sur ordinateur où motifs, plis et texture du vêtement, moirures, ombres, couleurs, expressions du visage, mouvement du corps ….sont retravaillés au pixel près pour que chaque personnage portant un nouveau prénom issu de son origine se révèle dans une nouvelle mise en scène.
C’est le même procédé employé pour l’exploration d’autres thématiques comme les Cabinets de Curiosités où se retrouvent des Anonymes dans des décors imaginaires. C’est l’attrait pour la composition graphique construite dans l’entrechoc de mondes d’objets photographiés, monuments, ponts, bateaux, fragments d’architecture ou de nature … isolés, superposés.
La série City of Spirit, l’esprit de la ville incarné par Lyon rend hommage à sa géographie collinaire, fluviale, historique et architecturale par une expression photographique et graphique débordante, démultipliée, un retour aux sources réinterprété ou une spatialité inventée et recomposée.
Très proche de la sensibilité artistique de la photographe américaine Viviane Maier (1926-2009), Denis Chobelet crée aussi des collections comme Another time, la ville, en noir et blanc et en couleur. Ces instantanés de rues sont retravaillés, vieillis, uniformisés jusqu’à ressembler à des parchemins.

In turn practicing painting, drawing, photography and graphics, Denis defines himself as a pictorialist in the era of computer technologies. He discovered DTP at the end of the 1980s and used it as a pioneer, learning at night how to use this technique for the production of posters and flyers. He made it his profession for around twenty years without leaving painting or drawing, with photography always present. During his travels near and far, he created a library of images of the animal, mineral and human world, taken in the moment.
From the 2000s, he moved from the professional field to the artistic field, and gradually developed a very personal creation where genres, countries, cultures mix, these are the Anonymous. Men and women, young or old, of all skin types and colors photographed there in their context and rendered here in an abstract and colorful background, chosen for contrast, osmosis or ethnicity. From the front, from the back, in profile, sitting, standing, lying down, the Anonymous appear to us almost alive, ready to step out of the frame, timeless. This hyperrealistic effect is the result of several hours of computer work where patterns, folds and texture of clothing, moires, shadows, colors, facial expressions, body movement, etc. are reworked to the pixel so that each character has a new first name from its origin is revealed in a new staging.
This is the same process used for the exploration of other themes such as Cabinets of Curiosities where Anonymous people find themselves in imaginary settings. This is the attraction for graphic composition constructed in the collision of worlds of photographed objects, monuments, bridges, boats, fragments of architecture or nature... isolated, superimposed.
The City of Spirit series, the spirit of the city embodied by Lyon, pays homage to its hilly, riverine, historical and architectural geography through an overflowing, multiplied photographic and graphic expression, a reinterpreted return to sources or an invented and recomposed spatiality.
Very close to the artistic sensibility of the American photographer Viviane Maier (1926-2009), Denis Chobelet also creates collections such as Another time, the city, in black and white and in color. These street snapshots are reworked, aged, standardized until they resemble parchments.
